No matter how I arrive at the ocean, I leave more alive. Looking at that vast expanse is like looking at the stars. It can be a metaphor for how small and insignificant we are or it can foster the feeling that we a part of something that is infinitely grand.
Standing above Ocean Beach in San Francisco, looking at my fellow human beings, I am often filled with such lofty thoughts.
When I was taking this picture, I recalled thinking about how much space the young boy running and the little girl walking took up in the entire picture. Both of them are way less than 1/1000th of the frame, yet each holds a psychological weight that is larger than the huge boulder or even the ocean.
Little things can make an enormous amount of difference. One thing that makes them stand out is that they are each doing a gesture. We can identify all of the little black silhouettes as people, yet we identify with these two individuals. The gestures they are making offer way more information to stimulate memories from our own history of youthful exuberance and childlike wonder. Of course, that is just the beginning of the story they and everyone else represents. Each individual story, as we all personally well know, is infinite.
