I used to shy away from taking pretty-as-a-postcard pictures. Then it dawned on me that I really liked postcards. I caught myself believing an idea that I created years ago about not wanting to be perceived as someone who wasn’t series about real art. At that dawning moment I had to laugh. What made me think I couldn’t do both?
This location is the very picture of a perfect postcard. My only job was to arrange the elements that make it perfect in such a way that you would love to sent to someone with a short note saying, “Having a wonderful time. This place is amazing. Wish you were here.”
With that goal in mind, I let go of the picture in my mind and found myself having a wonderful time and actually being there. I heard the splat of the waterfall and felt the spray on my face. I watched the waves and paid attention to how far they rolled up the beach and how long the saturated sand stayed dark before fading to golden brown. I saw how that dark part looked like a drop shadow under a floating sea. I just moved around until the aqua marine cove, the white surf, the mock shadow, the brown beach, the waterfall, the hills and the deeper blue deep ocean in the distance all had the same visual and emotional weight. It wasn’t hard. I knew it was perfect by the way I felt.
I’ve discovered the alchemy that happens when that feeling transfers into the photograph if I am feeling it when I take the picture. It’s a kind of magic.
I had a wonderful time. It was amazing. I wish you could have been there. Because you couldn’t be there, I took a picture to help you picture what it was like to be there yourself.
